Argentinian Smilies

Argentinian smilies was an invitation for exploration of the way we draw faces in constrained situations.

A 200x200px canvas was presented to the viewer with the simple title of "Draw a smile!"

The result were over a thousand smiles being drawn and sent.

This project was born while I was working on a long-perimeter sensing system for an oil company. Our job mainly consisted on detecting "anomalies" which brought to my mind the question of "what is an anomalous smilie?".

I hoped to explore this question by gathering drawings but frankly the overwhelming response had me feeling that it was ¡FuN! to have this collaborative experience and that frankly it was quite boring to have an statistical system try to emulate this aspect of human experience.

Sadly, due to a HDD failure most of these pictures were lost and the only remaining image is a mashup uploaded to instagram to thank people for their participation.

This is not the first project I have lost and will probably not be the last but it was fun while it lasted.

A mashup of many caricature smilies submitted by anonymous people.
